I believe the quote your referring to is Perlman saying that Heifetz was criticized for sounding cold because of his straight face and "stiff" body however if you closed your eyes you'd hear all of the emotion. I could be wrong though...

dunno if perlman ever said he was cold. however, it is well-known that perlman ever commented that heifetz's tone was like "molten lava" - very intense.

I revisit this video often... What an aristocrat he was, so elegant & restrained. And chapeau to the pianist who could keep up with him at that breakneck tempo!
