Flap 5 is a bit low for the 744 although I'm sure it can be done if the a/c is light. Flaps are extended as part of the after start checklist prior to taxiing. The setting is then checked twice during the before takeoff checklist.

This is FS9.

Flaps are generally extended according to weight. A light plane does not need full flaps extended whereas a heavier plane may.

You extend them whilst approaching the runway, yes. They take quite a while to extend so sitting on a busy runway for 5 minutes waiting for this to happen would cause huge problems.

And then when you took off, why didnt you extend full flaps???
alfaorionis (January 1, 1970 at 12:59 am)
Is that right to extend the flaps when you are taxing to the runway??? I thought you had to extend them when you were on the runway just before take off
