Erich Alfred "Bubi" Hartmann (April 19, 1922 - September 20, 1993), also nicknamed "The Blond Knight Of Germany" by friends and "The Black Devil" by his enemies, is the most successful fighter ace in the history of aerial combat. He scored 352 aerial victories (of which 345 were flown by the Soviet Air Force, and 260 of which were fighters) in 1,404 combat missions and engaging in aerial combat 825 times while serving with the Luftwaffe in World War II. Hartmann was forced to crash land his damaged fighter 14 times. This was due to damage received from parts of enemy aircraft he had just shot down, or mechanical failure. Hartmann was never shot down or forced to land due to enemy fire.

I've read it, it's a good book, although it suffers from a little hero-worship. Basically, he was a very good pilot who used excellent tactics. He did his best to avoid dogfighting (which meant a relatively even fight) and instead opted for fast hit-and-run attacks. Shooting planes from their blind spot then bugging out wasn't very knightly, IMO, but you can't argue with the results.

I'd love to read "Blond Knight of Germany" I'd find it very interesting. I'm I to understand that Hartmann's "hundreds" of kills were not padded lop-sided contests ? He didn't rack up many of his numbers by downing the equivalent of airborne horse carts ? It was mostly done against an even match ? Hundreds of times ? I know a kill is a kill. Was Hartmann dozens of times better than Yeager ?

You should read the book "Blonde Knight of Germany" it records all his victories...not many were easy kills...he even shot down 7 or 8 P-51D Mustangs flown by Americans....Hartmann was GOOD!!!!!!!!!!
