he was trying to kill that part of himself that was in love with margot. In essence, by shaving, he was trying to shed/kill his old self and bring a new self that didn't suffer from repressed love (of margot). yet, after he took that first stroke and realized that the pain (and love) was still there, he determined that only suicide could free him of his despair. blades don't kill; love does.
