I don't know anyone who says la:f-tr. What I think is happening here is that the difference between the front and back vowel is the important difference for the sake of the song (perhaps they wanted to reflect the difference between more and less prestigeous versions of the language), and Ella Fitzgerald, who spoke a rhotic dialect, didn't notice or think it important that she was singing the word with an "r".So, I don't think that version is possible either, er "aither".

Here in Southern England, we say [lahf-tuh]and [ahf-tuh] for "laughter" and "after" and I was aware of that phenomenon in Boston English (non-rhotic) but I didn't know that "A broadening" was compatible with a rhotic accent (Fitzgerald's).
