Superb!!! Sokolov in the Richter style! His jazzy & "motor" interpretation of the Precipitato sounds like an imitation of Richter's legendary performance (recorded for Melodiya in Soviet times). I prefer this version to the performances by Horowitz, Ashkenazy, Pollini, Argerich. Like Shostakovich's 7th symphony the 7th sonata by Prokofiev (finished in 1942) is connected with the drama and brutality of the Second World War.

This is an incredible performance even though at first I thought he was sort of "cheating' by playing it at such an unusually controlled tempo/Perhaps this is the solution to the almost insuperable problems of playing it all cleanly and accurately (Even at this conservative tempo Sokoloff does miss a few notes)But what power! What incredible machine-like,relentless, almost brutal,rhythmic control.Superb!Probably the best on YT But I haven't heard them all yet.

Pour l'avoir vu en concert il y a quelque temps, je dirai que son interprétation est une des meilleures pour cette pièce, l'énergie qu'il dégage en concert en la jouant est terrible. Je n'avais jamais vu auparavant de pianiste aussi "redoutable" sur un piano (hormis Richter et Bachkirov).10*
